What Are the 8 C’s in IFS?

The 8 C’s in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy are qualities of Self-Energy. IFS sees the Self as the core of who we are, and something we are born with. This means that the Self is not something to build, but rather something to access. When our protective parts begin to trust us to take a step back, there is more room for the Self.

The 8 C’s consist of curiosity, calmness, clarity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness. Below, they are described in greater detail.

Please note that this blog is intended for educational purposes, and is not a replacement for therapy.

The 8 C’s

  1. Curiosity is the desire to learn, know, or understand something. In IFS, it can be seen as a gentle, nonjudgmental interest towards one’s parts. When we show up with curiosity, there is more room to invite other qualities of Self in.

  2. Calm is a state of inner stillness; A grounded, sturdy presence that can hold space for whatever arises, without a protector jumping into the driver’s seat.

  3. Clarity is the ability to see things as they truly are, with clear and compassionate awareness.

  4. Compassion is the ability to see and acknowledge pain and suffering, and in practice, to extend loving energy to parts who may experience hurt and pain.

  5. Confidence can be seen as a sense of trust; An inner knowing in yourself and your capability to navigate through things that come your way in life.

  6. Courage means taking action in the presence of fear, uncertainty, or vulnerability.

  7. Creativity is a flow of authentic expression, and flexibility to invite new ideas and insights in. I think creativity looks a lot like extending permission to try new things with curiosity and courage.

  8. Connectedness is the inner sense of belonging, reciprocal understanding, and presence. To be connected is to be emotionally attuned, seen, and engaged. Brené Brown, a professor, author, and researcher, has created some of my favorite work on connection, courage, and vulnerability. Her podcast is a great way to learn more about her and her work! (If you don’t know where to start, her episode, “The Anatomy of Trust,” is a personal favorite of mine).

Why Are the 8 C’s Important?

The 8 C’s serve as a guide to know when we are in our Self-Energy. When trauma or wounds occur and protectors have been present for a long time, it can be difficult to access or know what being in Self-Energy feels like. IFS therapy offers space to unburden protectors from Self and get back in touch with Self-Energy. Over time, knowing when you are in Self-Energy will become more intuitive and identifiable.

In IFS, knowing the 8 C’s and what it feels like to be in Self-Energy doesn’t mean that protectors won’t show up from time to time. Rather, it means that you will likely be able to process and access the Self at a quicker pace. For example, instead of the protector being stuck in an old role or pattern, you will be able to tend to a protector with more perspective, and have more room to invite Self back in.
